“No Mud, No Lotus”
This saying, attributed to Thich Nhat Hahn, Buddhist spiritual leader, has been well quoted. I’ve heard some people really hate this saying! They’ve said it means that we have to accept yucky stuff in our lives, on all the levels, in order to get to the good stuff! They say it makes them feel trapped by the idea that bad, or challenging, experiences need to come before the good ones! I get it. I understand why they feel that way, but I see it differently. In fact, this quote gives me peace. It feels very affirmative to me! Firstly, it acknowledges the duality we experience here in 3D, right? After all, this is a dimension of polarity: good/bad, happy/sad, healthy/unwell, clear/confused, etc! This means that nothing is permanent. We are always swinging on the pendulum of polarity. No matter what phase we are in we know it won’t be there forever, which helps us feel especially good in the more challenging moments.SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL CAN EMERGE
But what really makes me feel good about the idea of “no mud, no lotus” is that out of the “YUCK” of our experiences we can become something beautiful, graceful, emanate our essence and shine in spite of it. The image of the beautiful lotus emerging from the mud means that the nutrients, vital forces and raw materials to make that lotus express its fullest potential are embedded in the mud! Without the mud the lotus would not be the fullest expression of its potential!WHAT’S MUDDY IN YOUR LIFE?
So, what’s muddy in your life right now? What are you struggling with that feels as yucky as mud? While your feet are oozing, slogging through darkly colored sludge, can you hold the possibility that there are essential nutrients in your experience that are feeding you exactly what you need to blossom into your fullest potential?WHO ARE YOU BECOMING?
Who are you becoming as you wade your way through the sludge? What change is catalyzing as a result? It is not always as easy to see it when you are in the middle of the swamp, and all the gifts of your experience may not have surfaced yet. Yet…can you hold the space and awareness that this experience, whatever it might be, holds the precious light that supports you in your highest potential?THIS CAN HELP…
For me, even opening to this possibility helps. If I can be open to the muddy experiences of life being the nutrient rich material I need to fully blossom, it helps me get through the experience more easily, with less inner turmoil, feeling less victimized and looking forward to the light at the end of the tunnel and the discovery of who I have become because of it!What are you experiencing in your muddy places and who are you becoming because of them?
